Cane Corso Recovery

The following is a summary of the phases of recovery and recognition
of the Cane Corso breed from 1973 through the present day.

Ricopero Della Razza
Author: Fernando Gasolino / Stephano Gandolfi (the book) il Cane Corso

Phases of recovery and recognition of Italian Corso Dog (from 1973 to 1983)

1973 During a meeting the Professor Francesco Ballotta and the Doctor Antonio Morsiani spoke about Italian Corso Dog observed in Puglia the 1972 from Ballotta and in the 1950 from Bonatti and described as "Molossian dog with short coat", different from Neapolitan Mastiff, similar to Bull Mastiff and like to "The lurcher Dog of Majorca" The prognathism is described as "his essential characteristic".

1974 During the Dog show in Foggia 5 subjects of Italian Corso Dogs were presented as not competing, a gray male from Ortanova (FG), that was high on the limbs and a little similar to The Great Dane, a couple of black dogs coming from Montella (AV), a black female and a striped male from Lucera (FG) that presented a short snout and limbs. The first subjects were noted in the province of Foggia.

1978 Dr. Paolo Breber announced in an article appeared on the ENCI monthly review, to have started the recover of the breed with a breeding of 19 subjects. Between 1975 and 1978 from the mating of the subjects he has met in Foggia , two litters were born: the first one of 7 puppies and the second one 2 years later of 10 puppies.

1979 Stefano Gandolfi, Giacarlo and Luciano Malavasi learnt about the existence of the Italian Corso Dog and after a trip in Puglia, they realized the necessity to intervene with aimed mating and a balanced food diet in order to start a real recovering program. Between the end of 1979 and January 1980, three subject were moved to Mantova: Tipsi. Brina and Dauno, that will generate, over one year, 18 puppies, among these Basir, Bulan, Babak, Aliot, real mainstays of the breed recovering program, under the control of Dr. Giovanni Bonatti and of the Dr. Giovanni Ventura, vet and judge ENCI and breeder that is the author of a more careful and precise study for the cut of the ears. In the meantime started some historic and iconographic researches about Italian Corso Dog with the support of Mr. Gianantonio Sereni, a cynophilist lover, and with Prof. Fernando Casolino, a genuine Lucan breeder and a real expert of the breed in his place of origin and researcher of local customs and traditions.

1981 to increase the subjects number of the breed was decided to leave some puppies, born form a programmed mating and in the meantime to increase in South Italy the researches for new blood lines.

16.10.1983 After a first meeting to verify the breed, happened in the 1982, there was in Mantova another meeting where 12 Italian Corso Dogs present there were examined and carefully measured By Dr. G. Ventura, in order to collect the first results, that reported, in nearly all subjects a light prognathism, cranium-facial axes lightly convergent, eyes in sub-frontal position, no slacking of the skin and no lymphatism, medium weight of 47 Kgs for males and 38 Kgs for females, medium height of 68 cm. For males and 64 cm. For females, black, striped, tawny, clear and gray coats. During the some day people present to the meeting decided to make and association founding the Specialized Society called S.A.C.C.

Phases of recovery and recognition of Italian Corso Dog (from 1984 to 1989)

The severe code approved provided for a minute control from the Managing Council and from Technical Committee on each mating and on each entrusting. The subjects were entrusted for free with the promise to supervise their growth and to support them, to place the males at disposal and to notify the heat of the females, to help them during the pregnancy and to take care of the puppies that later were entrusted. It was established that the lovers of this breed, enrolling at the S.A.C.C. with a contribution of 10.000 Lire only, could have a Italian Corso Dog, of three months old, vaccinated and with the ears and tail cropped.

16.06.1984 The Italian Corso Dog was presented as guest in some dog-shows, and meetings, as it was necessary to increase the attention of the cynophilist world and of the public in order to develop the breed. Very important was the meeting during June ’84, programmed by Dr. Bonetti, which have carefully observed Basir, during the training on the SAS center. The judges Franco Bonetti, Antonio Morsiani, Mario Perricone, were present for morphological test and Claudio Bussadori for temper test. 12 Italian Corso Dogs were present at the meeting. In this occasion was confirmed the validity of the remarks made from Ventura.

03.11.1985 The first official contact with ENCI was in Mantova at the presence of the judges Barbati, Mentasti, Morsiani, Quadri, Perricone, Vandoni, and Ventura. Even if they still were relatively heterogeneous dogs, the judges present at the meeting were agreed with the main lines noticed by Ventura.

1987 The Dr. Antonio Morsiani, with the task given from S.A.C.C. and with the approval of the Judges Committee, chaired by Dr. Perricone wich gave to dr. Morsiani a layout of Standard, adopted from FCI Congress in Munich during 1934, drawn up a project of Standard of the breed. For this about 100 specimens of the breed both to in North and in South were tested and measured, after then the Standard was modified according to FCI new directives , that foresaw a different distribution of the paragraphs and a less formal issuing of the test and it was presented to the Judges Committee.

11.1997 The Judges Council approved the standard of Italian Corso Dog drawn up by dr. Morsiani.

1988 The Managing Council of ENCI decided to submit the existing subjects to a experimental judgment in order to verify their homogeneity in structure and in character and their similarity or not with the characteristics mentioned in the "project of standard". During the Dog Shows in Milan, Florence and Bari, the Judges Morsiani, Perricone and Vandoni made some surveys of more than 50 subjects, agreeing on the validity of the project of Standard. S.A.C.C. sent to ENCI a census of the rustic subjects, completed with 97 photos. Obtained the authorization from ENCI for a further meeting, it was fixed for the Dog show in Foggia (October ’88) in order to make a comparison between S.A.C.C. project and "rustic" Italian Corso Dogs of South Italy.

1989 The "Open Book" for Italian Corso Dog was instituted by E.N.C.I. Managing Council, and its control was entrusted to a committee composed by the judges Barbati, Degradi and Quadri.
